SIMPATICI IS BACK

Simpatici is back with fresh episodes every Sunday at 20.30 on Net Television…

This national sitcom, based on the life of the Cassar family, their neighbours and colleagues at work, kicked off 11 years ago but is still equally fresh nowadays. The summer repetitions are ample proof. The Cassar family is a most normal local family with anything that could happen in our everyday life. Joe and Dora are parents to Ruth, Jason and Mariah. Ruth is married with a son. Jason is his grandma’s favourite, in-Nanna Katrin. This sweet old lady, sometimes wants everything her way… even during her funny antics in front of the statue of St. Anthony in the residence kitchen.

Maybe the simplicity of the plot and characters are the secrets behind the sitcom’s success.

ŻEŻA TAL-FLAGSHIP AT THE CATHOLIC INSTITUTE

The long awaited musical comedy Zeza tal-Flagship by Hermann Bonaci Productions has finally arrived. The local classic, originally written by Mikelang Borg, has been re-scripted by Joe Gatt to be sung on popular melodies.
The Flagship Bar was located in Barcellonetta, a part of Floriana close to the barracks, where the famous diva Zeza used to work after the First World War. Outgoing, lively, cheeky and curvy by nature, Zeza was not only the British sailors’ favourite, but had also Maltese clients from all social classes. Saucy adventure may tempt everyone, even the most noble of Medina. They are all human after all. But trouble looms when certain well-known aristocrats are caught practising the oldest profession. All this and more truly makes Zeza tal-Flagship a production not to be missed.

The original author,Mikelang Borg, was the founder of the renowned theatrical company Indipendenza by the end of the nineteenth century. Under his direction, the company used to perform regularly at the Manoel Theatre with an entirely Maltese repertoire, which was not so common in those days. He used to publish satirical newspapers, always socio-educationally intentioned. As an editor, he had to face justice whenever someone in authority felt he was slandered in any way. Once Mikelang was imprisoned for three days after refusing to uncover the identity of a student who had written an article about the University’s Rector.
Out of all of Mikelang’s literature, with a career spanning over 50 years, Zeza tal-Flagship remains the most popular, even nowadays, almost a century after its premier. And that was the reason why Hermann Bonaci Productions decided to revive the comic storyline with a musical for all.

Most of the actors are well known. Frida Cauchi will play Zeza, while the other parts will be performed by Hermann Bonaci, Simon Curmi, Marianne Muscat, Brian Farrugia, Simone Zammit, Triccas, Christabelle Curmi, Marilyn Custo, Joe Gatt, Antoinette Bonaci, Ronnie Galea, Mary Zarb and Neville Refalo. The night club’s dancing troupe is to be presented by the Paul Curmi Dancers, to the choreography of Eldridge Saliba Curmi, Sarah Mercieca and AnnMarie Baldacchino.

Music will be played live by an orchestra directed by Maestro Dominic Darmanin.

Żeża tal-Flagship, under Ray Abdilla’s direction, is to be performed at the Catholic Institute Theatre on the 2nd, 4th, 10th and 11th of February 2007. Booking is open.

Simpatici on the field - for a just cause

Popular sitcom Simpatici episodes will soon reach the 150 mark. For the occasion, cast and crew members have taken part in a charity football match organised by the Puttinu Cares for Children Fund at the Marsa Sports Complex.

Work in television drama is much different from running and playing on the field, and this was very obvious on the muscles! But the family spirit at Hermann Bonaci Productions and the noble cause were enough to move everything aside, put on the football boots and take part. Though sports outfits were put on, Ronnie Galea (Mr. Tonna) still decided to wear his usual hat, while it was impossible to convince Kevin Spiteri (Walter) to play football without his tie on!

With Simpatici being a family oriented drama, it was very fit for the sitcom team to be part of an event for charity.
